People Towels Design Contest – Deadline March 11th

The designers over at Inhabitat have decided to extend the deadline for their contest for PeopleTowels. The contest is called Stop the Paper Towels! and here is their press release:

Use your design skills to save trees and slash waste!

Every day, the United States generates over 3,000 tons of paper towel waste – and to produce every one of those tons, 17 trees are cut down and 20,000 gallons of water are consumed, contributing to deforestation, water pollution and global warming. It’s an ugly situation, but if you want to do something about it, now is your chance. Inhabitat is teaming up with PeopleTowels to challenge eco-minded
designers everywhere to enter our Stop the Paper Towels! Design Contest. We’re looking for clever, compelling green-themed graphic designs that can be printed onto a reusable cloth PeopleTowel to open people’s eyes to the situation and encourage the world to cut paper towel waste. The grand prize winner of this competition will receive $500 and 10% of royalties on every towel sold and the winning design will be published on and our future Inhabitat t-shirts! So what are you waiting for? Hit the big blue button below and get your design in it to win it!

I encourage all to enter this contest, especially since they extended the deadline to this Friday March 11th. I am actually currently working on a design myself, and although it’s not finished here’s a preview of the final version. Keep coming back for the final version, as I’ll edit this post and insert it once it’s done.

My Contest Entry

This is not a web-optimized version and the color is off but here is the design. Let me know what I could do to change it to make it better!

EDIT: I fixed the colors, had to switch the file to a rgb instead of the preset cymk. Also this is the final version that I sent in today, and just a reminder, the contest ends tomorrow! Best of luck!

Culturally Metaphorical

Culture – your surroundings that you are most familiar with and associate yourself with.

My culture is art. I spend so much time focused on art that it is my life. I grew up in a house that encouraged me to follow what I enjoyed and I’ve always enjoyed art.

Metaphor – a metaphor is a comparison between to objects that doesn’t use “like” or “as.” It also can be used to portray something indirectly.

A coffee cup symbolizes how I am always busy and always on the go. I need the caffeine to keep me going sometimes.

This image captures how mobile our society is and especially my culture. I'm always running around and without my phone I'd be really disorganized

Shoes are the ultimate example of moving around. And these shoes are different than any other and I'd like to think the art culture is like that.

Richard Garrison is an artist who uses color and shape to portray consumerism and different geographical locations he is familiar with. For example, he remembers a market and it is significant to him so he portray it in a painting. Here are some of his works.

Beauty vs. Repulsion

For our first Drawing II assignment, we were assigned the study of beauty and repulsion and their relationship. Here is my beginning to this project.

BEAUTY: Something that causes awe, wonder, or pleasure in the viewer.

Beautiful Sunset

Colorado Mountains

NYC Times Square

REPULSION: the feeling of intense aversion to something; uncontrollable repugnance.

Gas Prices and Our Dependence on Oil

Trash and Human Apathy

Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada, is an amazing artist who specializes in portraits. He goes outside of the normal medium of canvas or paper though, and uses walls; or in the case of his Expectation Project, land. He captures the beauty of people, and even sees beauty in walls that are falling apart that most would deem unattractive, or even repulsive. His portraits capture emotions of people in the city and are washed away after each storm.

My idea for the diptych project is to use only colors that are beautiful and repulsive. And for the subject or focal point of each piece, I will use non-objective marks.
